done for now.
Not that anyone reads this, but I just wanted to state that I believe I will discontinue my "blogging", as seldom as I might do it. Maestro DeRenzi of Sarasota Opera stated yesterday that we really need to get ourselves away from the computers and into the world of opera, becoming fully immersed in it in order to have a shot in hell of actually doing this (how he said it was much funnier, but I can't remember what he said). So, goodbye cyber world... hello ART!

Road trip!
Happy New Year!!! I like how divisible 2010 is... It looks even and is even easier today. "Twenty Ten" just rolls off the tongue. I hope that this year also flows easily, both mathematically and otherwise.
I leave for Sarasota tomorrow, by way of Nashville and Jacksonville to see some dear friends. I look forward to "filling the well," as Julia Cameron would say, before diving into another world of opera. I look forward to living and breathing opera again, being able to focus on singing and performing. But each of these experience comes with its own stresses... You must meet and make friends with a new group of people (I am lucky to know some wonderful people who will be there, making that aspect at least a little easier), the initial "Death by Aria" (where all apprentice and studio artists sing an aria of their choice for the Maestro, Apprentice Artist director and General Manager... ), moving into a new place with new roommates, the promise of cockroaches, etc. etc. Ok, the cockroaches are FL specific, but you get the idea. But there are so many things that make me THRILLED to be leaving. Here's a list (for my own benefit, really):
1) my car doors will no longer freeze shut
2) no more 2 hour (each way) commute to school
3) the chorus of Cav/Pag actually makes me love opera
4) I actually like road trips
5)... because I get to eat McDonalds
6) my iphone weather currently states... Chicago: 13, Sarasota: 53
...and that's just a start.
But I got off track. I'm really grateful to have a wealth of friends who are in other professions and have different interests. Last night I spent New Years with an actor, an internet marketing company CEO and a film maker/lighting designer (did I mention they were wearing spy glasses, tiger-striped pants and a wolf hat and false eyelashes, respectively?). Tomorrow I will visit a singer/songwriter and a jazz musician. I am grateful for all of these people, because they keep me grounded and humble (as they are all so brilliant and amazing) and teach me so much. They've made me a better person and therefore, hopefully, a better artist. And then throw in the amazing singers I have met, people who are extremely talented and unique and supportive, and I feel like I couldn't wish for better friends... they are what fill my well, my soul.
So, I didn't make any resolutions for this year, except maybe to stop getting parking tickets. And, as always, to do my best performing and really ENJOY the music. But, more importantly, I'm grateful for what the years leading up to this one have given me. Enjoy the journey, enjoy the music, enjoy the moment... that will be my resolution... and to not get parking tickets.
